Saint Louis - On Sunday, December 3rd, Washington University Crew along with the Department of Athletics officially christened the program's newest racing shell - a mid-weight Vespoli V1 8+. Named after Dr. Jim Schiele - long time supporter of WashU crew and prominent benefactor of the University - the racing shell is a valuable addition to the program's fleet and represents continued progress towards establishing WashU's name in the world of elite intercollegiate rowing.
Director of Development for the Department of Athletics David Jolley followed Head Rowing Coach Andrew Black in introducing Schiele, a St. Louis native, who holds four degrees from the University - undergraduate, two masters, and a doctorate. As a significant WashU benefactor, Schiele has received multiple institutional awards across various University divisions. After christening the boat, Schiele himself recognized advocates for the program including the new John M. Schael Director of Athletics, Anthony Azama, along with the coaching staff and athletes themselves.
With the support of Dr. Jim Schiele along with numerous others who enable the advancement of WashU Rowing, the program looks forward to further success nationally and to its development as an institutional leader in athletics at Washington University.
